Auto-generation (or auto-suggestion) of subjects was part of what I’d like to achieve (possibly not as a first iteration!) and I was considering whether there was any scope for using the abstract and title (and even previous submissions) to suggest appropriate terms.
I don’t know if it’s a silly idea, but perhaps we can set up a usergroup github repository before importing/writing any code, and perhaps try to work through the requirements as issues?

Yes, it was :)
while the auto-generated subjects from tags is a great idea, the thesaurus is something else, actually I usually use both!
I am now trying to understand why the auto-generated does not work, I do not know if it is specific of my install or there are differences with the core or I don't know :)
Maybe we should upload the source code of Agro into the github working group and start from there to create a generic plugin that supports thesaurus. I even tried to find a student that could have helped in that.

    I've been playing with the idea of using a thesaurus with eprint
    since long time. My base for making something usable was the was
    the agro plugin (in the bazaar) but my limited time and knowledge
    made my effort useless.
    However I think it would be great if eprint moves to thesaurus
    representation instead of a flat subject tree.
