[EP-tech] Bazaar and directory permissions

One for the record just in case anyone else gets caught out by it: EPrints Bazaar silently fails to enable packages if the directory permissions in <archiveid>/cfg, <archiveid>/cgi, etc don’t include group write.

I have no idea whether we did something to the permissions, but group write wasn’t set on a variety of archive files and directories. The consequence was that we could install Bazaar packages fine, and attempting to enable them resulted in the correct ‘configuration reloaded’ messages, but the configuration files weren’t copied into the archive tree and there was no indication that anything was wrong.

The fix was to chmod -R g+w the relevant directories.

Is it worth EPrints checking permissions and failing with an error? Or was this just us?

Thanks,
