Re: [EP-tech] Browse Views - People

Hi James,

Five years ago, we have replaced the browse views for creators/editors/examiners completeley with a lookup function because we think it doesn’t make sense to create and offer lists for  more than 300K unique names created from more than 1 million name records. No one would browse such huge lists.

https://www.zora.uzh.ch/creators_editors.html (you may search e.g. with “Schaepman”)

Much better both from a user perspective (usability, always current data) and the provider perspective (disk usage, CPU usage to create list, effort/usage ratio). Also, a large flank for DDOS attacks is removed.

We haven’t shared the code yet, but could do so on github/eprintsug, if there is interest by the community.

P.S. A nice goodie is the collaborations button on the right, but this is an Elasticsearch/Vega visualization thing.

Kind regards,

Martin

Hi All,

I was looking at our file storage usage yesterday and made a surprising discovery. The browse view for people/authors/creators (whichever you choose to call them) takes up a huge amount of storage space on our server.

Presumably because we have a lot of authors listed in EPrints. At any one time almost all of these pages are not in use. Short of disabling this view is there any sort of option to have these pages generated on-the-fly as users request them instead of all being premade?

We're still on an old EPrints as we await a suitable time to switch over to the new server with a more recent version of EPrints.

Thanks,

James
