Re: [EP-tech] Problem with a new 3.4.7 installation

Hi Robin,

As you are running Ubuntu rather than Red Hat based Linux, then this is unlikely to be an SELinux issue, unless you have deliberately installed this.  You have tried both version 3.4.6 and 3.4.7 of EPrints both of which I have tested on Ubuntu 24.04, so I don't believe there is a specific bug that is causing the issues you are reporting.  Based on the issues with creating documents and auto.css and auto.js not being generated correctly, this sounds like a file permissions issue.

Historically, we have recommended switching the Apache user and group to "eprints" from what on Ubuntu would have been "www-data".  More recently, we have advised making sure that the eprints user is in the www-data group and the www-data user is in the eprints group.  I assume you have followed the instructions under [1] in particular the "Dependencies and Pre-configuration" section and the part of the "Downloading and Deploying EPrints Source" that includes the "chown" and "chmod" commands.

I have spun up a Ubuntu 24.04 VM (on Virtualbox running on Windows 11) and followed the instructions in [1]. I was able to upload files to the EPrints repository created and I don't see any problems will auto.js/auto.css being created.  Maybe at some point you accidentally changed the permission. At the end of this reply are the permissions for all the directories down to the generated auto.js and the file I uploaded as a test.  Hopefully, this helps you work out what is wrong.

I did note on a couple of occasions that when I finished uploading some larger files and then clicked next, it did not want to load the next stage.  However, if I refreshed the current page and then clicked next, it worked fine and did not see any issues (Apache) server side.  The VM I set up had very low bandwidth for some reason (nothing to do with the EPrints install, possibly that my Wi-Fi was playing up)

Regards

David Newman

Hello!

I’m reaching out to the list because I’m getting desperate after trying for a few weeks to make a new EPrints 3.4.6 installation, then 3.4.7 when it came out, well, just work. Ubuntu 24.04, clean install from the tar or from github, no plugins just the pub flavour and a few style files. First login : nothing happens, the connexion runs still, the page never loads. I refresh, I’m logged in. It looks like it’s working fine. Then the minute I try to create a new document, when I save it, the site becomes totally unresponsive,  I can’t even stop apache from the terminal. When I restart it, it goes down like that again. ¸

I first had it running locally on a Virtualbox, I thought my computer was just not powerful enough to run EPrints, but now it does that on my dev server as well.

Tables get created in the database, files and folders in the documents directory get created. I can only get the site back working by erasing all eprints and starting again. I haven’t seen anything in the logs.

Does that ring a bell to anyone?

I also encountered an issue where the auto.css and auto.js files were not generated correctly, saying that they were missing when I run the generate_static command, and being only able to continue generating static files by plugging a copy of already generated auto files into the html directory. But that was with more of my archive’s cfg files and plugins installed, not on a new install, so I have to look into that as well. Just wondering if it could be a piece of the puzzle.

Thanks for your help!

Robin
