[EP-tech] Word Documents won't download

Hi James and others,

On the topic of dodgy filenames, another thing I have been working on
for 3.4.3 is generic filenames, i.e. <fileid>.bin, e.g. 12345.bin.?
Obviously, this is quite complicated as it has to deal with legacy as
well as new repositories.? Therefore, this functionality (to create
files with the filename format <fileid>.bin) will be disabled by
default.? However, EPrints will look for the file on disk first using
its filename or otherwise its fileid with a .bin file extension, whether
the primary functionality is enabled or not. (If the new functionality
is not and has never been enabled this will make no functional
difference to EPrints current behaviour). Therefore, if you have a
problem with a file not being downloadable, all you need to do is go
into the filesystem and change the filename to the appropriate
<fileid>.bin.? As the determination of which file to load from disk is
done under the hood (Storage::Local plugin), no databases changes are
needed and this will not cause any anomalies in the XML revision files.

If anyone has any thoughts about this functionality.? In particular any
edge cases where it might fall over that would be useful to know.? I
have tested request a copy functionality for PDFs that are coversheeted,
which has been a gotcha in the past due to the layers of obfuscation and
this change does not cause any problems.? It is possible it could cause
a problem woth thirs party applications if they put files on disk in a
way that circumvents the Storage::Local plugin.

Regards

David Newman
