[EP-tech] Looking for help with statistics packages

This is a MIME message. If you are reading this text, you may want to consider changing to a mail reader or gateway that understands how to properly handle MIME multipart messages. I an looking for help with both the eprints statistics package from U Tasmania ↵ and the IRstats package. Since both of these provide very sparse documentation, ↵ and the IRStats list was of no help, I thought some of you might be able to ↵ help. For the Eprints stats package, this is the issue: When I upgraded from ↵ eprints2 to eprints 3, I was running both versions on the same box for awhile, ↵ so I used the same archive name, but gave the database a different name with ↵ eprints 3. The stats package is still pulling data from the older database ↵ (lawarchive, which is also the archive ID, rather than newarchive, which is the ↵ new database name.) Can I fix this with settings for eprinstats, or do I need ↵ to recreate the lawarchive table from newarchive, and make that the table for ↵ the archive? For the IRStats package, I am running into various errors and would appreciate ↵ help from anyone with knowledge of the package. Ken Hirsh Kenneth J. Having successfully copied the database to lawarchive and configured eprints to ↵ point to that database. I now see that the UTas statistics package cannot ↵ handle ePrints3 at all. It is looking for the table structure for eprints2. ↵ So, my need for help with IRStats is efven more important. I had to make changes to the installed version to get it to work for our ePrints 3 installation. It was sometime ago but I will revisit what I did and send you some details over the next week or two. You will not need to recreate database tables. I will make a new ePrintsStats package available to the ePrints community as soon as possible. I think this package is so important that it should ship with the Eprints distribution.

The one developed at UTas (with acknowledgement to Uni Melbourne / Uni of Otago) should NOT in my opinion be shipped with Eprints - although I personally cannot really say this. It would be up to the UK guys and the main developer Arthur Sale to determine this. The UK guys are working on their own stats solution IRstats available at: http://trac.eprints.org/projects/irstats When this is more mature perhaps this should be bundled with ePrints?? I have been meaning to get this installed and start using it here at UTas as either a replacement for our current stats package or more likely as an extra stats package offering more or different stats to our users and the general community. Unfortunately I have not yet found the time to get it working on a development server. Hope to real soon - I keep saying this :-) FYI: There has been some problems with the current package running on our ePrints 3 production server recently that I have almost completely solved. Our production server was performing extremely badly (slowly) and it turned out to be mysql being bogged down with requests from web robots for statistics pages. Also web robots were hitting other parts of the eprints site filling up the statistics database with hits. We had to deny robots access to the /es/ directory through the robots.txt file. We also added an index to the stats mysql database and removed all hits from robots from the stats database. The statistics have been reenabled and are performing alot better whilst not affecting overall system performance. Although we have now got complaints from researchers that their stats for their documents are now lower than before - this is because we have removed the downloads from robots from the database. When I have finished making changes I will repost the stats package on the UTas eprints site and send the details to the list. BTW: I have just noticed that the Uni of Otago have changed the UTas stats so that it reports hits from Web robots separately: http://eprints.otago.ac.nz/es/?archive=otago_eprints Kind regards, Christian. -- Christian McGee, Senior Computer Systems Officer, School of Computing and Information Systems, University of Tasmania, Telephone: +61 03 6324 3445, Fax: +61 03 6324 3368, E-mail: C.McGee AT utas.edu.au --Apple-Mail-11-493407431 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 <html><body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: ↵ space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "> <br><div><div>On 14/05/2008, at 12:26 AM, Yuri ↵ wrote:</div><br = class=3D"Apple-interchange-newline"><blockquote ↵ type=3D"cite"><p = style=3D"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><font ↵ face=3D"Helvetica" = size=3D"3" style=3D"font: 12.0px Helvetica">I think this ↵ package is so = important that it should ship with the Eprints ↵ distribution.</font></p> = </blockquote></div><div><br></div>The one ↵ developed at UTas (with = acknowledgement to Uni Melbourne / Uni of Otago)=A0should NOT in my = opinion be shipped with Eprints - although I personally cannot really = say this. =A0It would be up to the UK guys and the main developer Arthur = Sale to determine this. =A0The UK guys are working on their own stats = solution IRstats available at:<div><div><a = href=3D"http://trac.eprints.org/projects/irstats">http://trac.eprints.org/= projects/irstats</a></div><div><br></div><div>When this is more mature = perhaps this should be bundled with = ePrints??</div><div><br></div><div><div>I ↵ have been meaning to get this = installed and start using it here at UTas as either a replacement =A0for = our current stats package or more likely as an extra stats package = offering more or different stats to our users and the general community. = =A0Unfortunately I have not yet found the time to get it working on a = development server.
