http://mailman.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/eprints-tech *** EPrints community wiki - http://wiki.eprints.org/ Dear all, We have currently a rather limited size repository, and I would like to know whether it is possible to assign a more 'meaningful' (manually chosen) name to an item for its URL. Right now, each item gets a number, and the url is e.g. rr.epfl.ch/3/, which I would like to replace by e.g. rr.epfl.ch/superresolution/. Would there be a way of doing this within EPrints? Or do I have to write redirects for each of those (meaningful) addresses to the numerical equivalent? Thanks already for your help! Patrick

http://mailman.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/eprints-tech *** EPrints community wiki - http://wiki.eprints.org/ Where do you plan for those names to come from? Are they metadata in the repository? If so, are the names persistent? What happens if someone changes the metadata? -- Les Carr On 14 Jun 2009, at 21:16, Patrick Vandewalle wrote: > http://mailman.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/eprints-tech > *** EPrints community wiki - http://wiki.eprints.org/ > Dear all, > > We have currently a rather limited size repository, and I would like > to know whether it is possible to assign a more 'meaningful' (manually > chosen) name to an item for its URL. http://mailman.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/eprints-tech *** EPrints community wiki - http://wiki.eprints.org/ Yes, something like this Custom ID would be wonderful (but preferably I would not have to rely on another site such as tinyURL ;). As you said Leslie, I would assume them to come as metadata (or in a separate tool). The issue is that we would like to post the URL in the published paper for reference to additional material (code, data sets, etc). And I think it is nicer to put a more "readable" URL in a paper. Another related issue I encountered is that if I now update the item in the repository after the paper gets published, its update gets a new ID and therefore URL. This is very undesired behavior if the address is already published somewhere (in the paper or elsewhere...) A solution could be to update the PDF but not put it as a "new version", but that sounds a bit like unintended behavior. Are there any other/better options for that? What's wrong with the present version system? Although the old link
points to the old version, but the reader is informed about the more
recent one, cf. e.g.
http://bc.klf.uw.edu.pl/112/
Moreover the recommended OpenDOAR policy is just that:
# Changes to deposited items are not permitted.
# Errata and corrigenda lists may be included with the original record if ↵
required.
# If necessary, an updated version may be deposited.
Best regards
Janusz

http://mailman.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/eprints-tech *** EPrints community wiki - http://wiki.eprints.org/ Dear Patrick Sorry for the slow response I just see your question now. There should be a way. I've done somethign similar. We wanted to have the URL's to be not just a number, but we wanted to have somethign like /volume/nr/ I've made two changes in the eprints system, with whcih i've managed to get this to work. There are several places that you have to make sure it works - accepting the url's and goign to the right eprints - review mails (should list the correct URL) - the URL's constructed by the system The most important is that you have somehow a way to find the correct eprint. For me- i've added the volume and number fields, and i do a database search on it. So when someone opens a URL the system gets the eprint-id - and then opens the right document. Let me know if you'd like to get more detailed info Regards Bas Patrick Vandewalle schreef: > http://mailman.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/eprints-tech > *** EPrints community wiki - http://wiki.eprints.org/ > Dear all, > > We have currently a rather limited size repository, and I would like > to know whether it is possible to assign a more 'meaningful' (manually > chosen) name to an item for its URL. http://mailman.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/eprints-tech *** EPrints community wiki - http://wiki.eprints.org/ Dear Bas, and others, Thanks a lot for all the replies. I realized that it wasn't going to be a very simple adaptation (although I understand it should be possible, with some tweaking), so for now I just stick with some redirects, which do the trick too (even if it's not entirely through the EPrints system itself). Thanks again!
