It was quite frustrating to track it down. I'm assuming you are using a pre 3.x.x version of eprints.?? For me it was the generate views script that I had cronned each night... We had a few simple views being created each, we added a new people view, which then subsorted by year, this took the processing time up to almost 22hours (from 2hrs). Eventually the number of eprints in our system grew, and the script was taking 24+ hours, and cron fired off a 2nd copy, before the first had finished. We ended up getting load averages of 300+ !!! While both were running concurrently. To fix this I fiddled the settings for mysql. Increasing memory etc. The 128000000 values I used as 1/8 of system memory.. I have since increased it even more, but I recommend keeping it below 50% of system memory. Inside MySQL as root/owner of the MySQL system Run SET GLOBAL query_cache_size = 128000000; SET GLOBAL key_buffer_size = 128000000; SET GLOBAL table_cache = 128; Hope this helps a bit. On two occasions in the last couple of months this server has halted for no apparent reason. What has happened is this: I have attempted to connect to the server using SSH Secure Shell. This connection appears to be successful but a command prompt never appears -- this is the first indication that something is amiss. I then try to connect to the server using TightVNC, but this too fails. I check to see if EPrints is accessible and find that it is not. The only option I am left with is to physically turn off the server, then turn it back on. Has anyone else encountered this with an Ubuntu server?
