Hi Les & Chris,

Every now and then I come up against a longstanding bug in the way
EPrints handles successive versions and updates:

This paper was originally deposited as an unpublished preprint.

http://eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/15753/

Then it was updated as a published book chapter, with book editor,
book title, book publisher.

But the only thing that appears in the displayed metadata is the
editor of the book -- not the title or publisher. (It's there, in the
entered and stored metadata, but not in the displayed metadata.)

I tried today to deposit it as a new version, but still the title and
publisher never got through.

I think the underlying problem is in two parts:

(1) New versions might switch categories, e.g., unpublished preprint
to published book chapter, or conference paper to published journal
article.

The metadata fields for the categories are often not the same, and the
cloning/update mechanism does not equate them correctly. (There aren't
that many categories, so the fix might be to map the categories
ontoone unique, differentiated master list of all metadata, equating
the equivalent ones, etc.)

(2) The display of the reference is not correct. What should be
showing is Authorname(s) date, paper title, journalname (or editor,
book title, publisher), volume, issue, pagespan etc.

That display should be picking up its parameters from the master list
of metadata, not from the very first deposit's metadata.

Hope it can be fixed.

Chrs, Stevan
