The one developed at UTas (with acknowledgement to Uni Melbourne /
Uni of Otago) should NOT in my opinion be shipped with Eprints -
although I personally cannot really say this. It would be up to the
UK guys and the main developer Arthur Sale to determine this. The UK
guys are working on their own stats solution IRstats available at:
http://trac.eprints.org/projects/irstats

When this is more mature perhaps this should be bundled with ePrints??

I have been meaning to get this installed and start using it here at
UTas as either a replacement for our current stats package or more
likely as an extra stats package offering more or different stats to
our users and the general community. Unfortunately I have not yet
found the time to get it working on a development server. Hope to
real soon - I keep saying this :-)

FYI: There has been some problems with the current package running
on our ePrints 3 production server recently that I have almost
completely solved. Our production server was performing extremely
badly (slowly) and it turned out to be mysql being bogged down with
requests from web robots for statistics pages. Also web robots were
hitting other parts of the eprints site filling up the statistics
database with hits. We had to deny robots access to the /es/
directory through the robots.txt file. We also added an index to the
stats mysql database and removed all hits from robots from the stats
database. The statistics have been reenabled and are performing alot
better whilst not affecting overall system performance. Although we
have now got complaints from researchers that their stats for their
documents are now lower than before - this is because we have removed
the downloads from robots from the database. When I have finished
making changes I will repost the stats package on the UTas eprints
site and send the details to the list.

BTW: I have just noticed that the Uni of Otago have changed the UTas
stats so that it reports hits from Web robots separately:
http://eprints.otago.ac.nz/es/?archive=otago_eprints

Kind regards, Christian.
