I noticed that my first email to the Eprints tech list was sent using HTML
format which ended up in an attachment, here is the question in plain text.

We are new to EPrints, and now that we have an EPrints 3.1.1 test repository
going, I am investigating the batch import functionality. We need to import
many PDFs (theses) along with their metadata. Is there a document that is
particularly useful which explains the best way to accomplish this? I assume
that I would need to convert MARC records to the Eprints internal format? How
does the EPrints metadata format compare to DC? Do I need to import the
digital files from an HTTP server or can I import from a local folder?

Thank you in advance for any links to useful documents on this topic and/or
comments and/or advice.
